Fables of Flowers for the Female Sex. With Zephyrus and Flora, a Vision
John Huddlestone Wynne's 1773 verse fables, dedicated to Lady Charlotte Finch and written for the amusement of Charlotte, Princess Royal of England. Wynne gives speech to the flowers — a silver-robed lily, a blooming jonquil — and lets them deliver the moral and refined admonitions a young lady of the period was expected to absorb, on the theory that flowers want nothing but a voice to make them the most pleasing of monitors. The collection closes with Zephyrus and Flora, a Vision. His preface acknowledges a debt to the author of The Vizir; or Enchanted Labyrinth for the plan of the thing.
