Five Jars
M. R. James's only children's book, published in 1922 by the author of Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. It is written as a long letter to a girl named Jane, explaining how the writer came to hear something from the owls. In a wood he will not name, beside a brown clear stream, he finds five small jars — and each one, used in turn, opens a sense he did not have before: the speech of animals, the sight of the Small People who live alongside us, and the company of Wag, Slim and the cat. The jars are also wanted by others, and much of the book is the business of keeping them safe.
