Tales and Novels of J. de La Fontaine — Volume 14
Volume fourteen of La Fontaine's verse tales in English translation, containing four: The Countryman Who Sought His Calf, in which a man up a tree looking for a lost calf interrupts a pair of lovers with the wrong question at the wrong moment; Hans Carvel's Ring, in which an elderly husband marries a young wife and takes fantastical precautions against being cuckolded; The Hermit; and The Convent Gardener of Lamporechio. These are the Contes rather than the Fables — worldly, comic and frankly bawdy, written for adults, and turning on appetite and misplaced vigilance rather than on morals.
