The golden spears, and other fairy tales
Edmund Leamy's retellings of Irish fairy tales, each with a short note on the older source it comes from. Liban, daughter of Ecca of Munster, survives the bursting of a neglected magic well that drowns her family and the plain of the Gray Copse — now Lough Neagh — living a year in a chamber beneath the lake before praying to be turned into a salmon, her lap-dog changed into an otter to follow her through the salt sea. Other tales take up the crannogs, the lake dwellings of old Ireland, and the golden spears of the title. Leamy cites the Book of the Dun Cow and Joyce's Old Celtic Romances.
