Verses for Children, and Songs for Music
Juliana Horatia Ewing's verses for children, with songs set for music, illustrated in short numbered parts. The long opening poem follows an Elf who leaves home to seek adventure with a thimble on his back and a rose-twig for a weapon: he raids a bumble bee's nest, hears the bee humming behind him and wishes he had heard it coming, fights a famous fight and wins it, and settles down to the honey — only for a beast he takes for a bear to clear out the thimble while he licks his lips over his luck. His troubles are not over, and the rest of the collection ranges through the same mixture of comedy and small disaster.
