Mr. Sweet Potatoes, and Other Stories
A collection of illustrated children's stories published by the Werner Company in 1899. The title piece is an account of a Chinese milkman known to his neighbours as Old Father Sweet Potatoes, whose trade brings him the great temptation of the water-butt and whose reputation is accordingly divided; the narrator, a foreign resident, takes him into the yard to show him they have a well of their own. Around it sit further sketches of village and domestic life, several of them explaining to an American child a China where milk and butter go unused and cheese is regarded with horror.
