A Flower Wedding: Described by Two Wallflowers
Walter Crane's 1905 picture book stages a wedding in which every guest is a flower and every flower is a pun. Lad's Love courts Miss Meadow-Sweet, the bride wears lily white and Sweet William stands beside her in red, Ladies' Fingers hold up the train, and the bridesmaids are Ladysmocks in Forget-Me-Not blue. Old Man's Beard gives her away — a Dandelion in his youth — the lines are attested by Solomon's Seal, and London's Pride turns out to watch. The whole ceremony is told in rhyming couplets by two wallflowers who were not invited to dance, with Crane's decorated plate on every page.
