Tales and Novels of J. de La Fontaine — Volume 18
Volume eighteen of La Fontaine's verse tales in English translation, containing three: The Case of Conscience, which opens with a wry aside on the liberty a fabulist takes in naming his characters — every chambermaid an Ilia or an Egeria, if Horace could do it — before settling on Anne and the Parson; The Devil of Pope-fig Island; and Feronde. As in the rest of the Contes, these are worldly comic narratives for adults rather than beast fables, and the joke is usually at the expense of whoever is most confident of his own righteousness.
