The Nursery, Number 164: A Monthly Magazine for Youngest Readers
Number 164 of The Nursery, the Boston monthly for the youngest readers, in very short illustrated pieces. Jane, in a clean apron, meets a dog she names Skip and offers to smooth his silken hair — and learns, sitting on the ground in tears, that what the sly rogue wanted was her cake. George is given a kite almost as tall as himself by his grandfather, gets it entangled in a tree on its first outing, and brings it home with a hole in it before it has ever properly flown. The lessons are gentle, immediate, and always the child's own to draw.
