1881 · Children's Literature · 1 chapters

Randolph Caldecott takes the old song Where are you going, my pretty maid? and draws out its six exchanges into a whole picture book, with a frame of his own invention: a lady tells her son, a poor young squire, that he must seek a wife with a fortune. He meets the milkmaid on her way to the milking, walks with her, learns her father is a farmer, and proposes — and then asks what her fortune is. My face is my fortune, sir, she says; then I can't marry you; nobody asked you, sir. Caldecott gives the last line three pages to itself, which is the whole joke.
