An Alphabet of Old Friends
Walter Crane's alphabet of nursery rhymes, one letter to a verse, engraved and printed in colour by Edmund Evans. A is for the rhymes a Victorian child already knew by heart: Dickery Dickery Dock, Hush-a-bye Baby on the tree-top, Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy and Bess finding a bird's nest with five eggs in, Jack Sprat and his wife cleaning the platter between them, and King Cole calling for his pipe and his bowl and his fiddlers three. Crane groups four letters to a coloured plate, so the book is as much a picture book as a primer.
