The Song of Sixpence: Picture Book
Walter Crane's picture book of nursery rhymes, engraved and printed in colours by Edmund Evans and bound with his Alphabet of Old Friends. Sing a song of sixpence and the rhymes that keep it company are given a full page each: the cock and hen arguing over eggs and shoes, the mouse running up the clock, Hush-a-bye Baby on the tree-top, Jack Sprat and his wife between them cleaning the platter, and King Cole calling for his pipe, his bowl and his fiddlers three. Crane's flat colour and crowded borders were what made these books collectable in their own right.
